Rafting in Lombok Indonesia (Miminkalisawah)

Rafting in Lombok | Rapids, Rice Terraces and Waterfalls in One Day

Most visitors come to Lombok for the beaches, but the island's rivers offer a different way to see the countryside. Rafting in Lombok takes you through village farmland, rice terraces and tropical forest, with enough rapids to keep things exciting without needing any experience.

This guide explains where to go, what to expect, when to travel and how to fit a rafting trip into a stay in South Lombok. If you are still building your trip, our Lombok itinerary shows how it fits alongside other highlights.

What is rafting in Lombok?

Rafting in Lombok means a guided trip down a river in an inflatable boat, usually with five or six people and a guide at the back steering. Trips are suitable for beginners. You paddle on your guide's instructions, and the guide handles the difficult sections.

Most trips run on rivers in the north-west of the island, in the foothills of Mount Rinjani. The rapids are generally described as moderate, which makes them popular with families with older children and with first-timers.

Why try white water rafting in Lombok?

Rafting is one of the few activities on the island that combines adventure with a look at everyday rural life. Along the river you pass rice fields, small farms and local villages that most visitors never see from the road.

It also works well as a change of pace. After several days on the beach, a half-day on the water is an easy way to add variety to your itinerary.

Where to go rafting in Lombok

Karang Bayan River

The Karang Bayan River near Lingsar is the most popular option for rafting in Lombok. The route covers around five kilometres of rapids and takes roughly one and a half to two hours on the water. Most operators start from a camp in the Lingsar area, where you receive a safety briefing and your equipment.

Jangkok River

The Jangkok River is in the same part of West Lombok and is also used for rafting. Trips follow a similar format, with a short warm-up, a river run of around an hour and a half, and lunch back at the camp. If you book a package, your operator will tell you which river you are on.

Combining rafting with waterfalls and temples

Many tours pair rafting with another stop in the area. Common options include Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel waterfalls in Central Lombok (see our guide to waterfalls in Lombok) or Mayura Water Palace near Mataram. These make a full day out, so check the total duration before you book.

What tourists should know

  • Fitness: You need a moderate level of fitness and should be comfortable in water. Most operators provide life jackets and helmets.
  • Age and health: Operators set their own minimum ages. Rafting is generally not recommended during pregnancy or for travellers with back or spinal injuries. If you are travelling with children, see our tips for travelling with kids in Indonesia.
  • What to wear: Swimwear or quick-dry clothing, a secure pair of sandals or water shoes, and sun protection. Leave valuables at your hotel.
  • Cameras: Bring a waterproof case or ask your guide whether photos are taken for you.
  • Lunch: Most packages finish with a simple Indonesian meal at the camp.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Underestimating the journey. The rafting itself is short, but the drive from the south of Lombok is long. Plan the trip as a full day.
  • Booking the cheapest option without checking safety. Ask what equipment is provided and whether guides give a proper briefing.
  • Ignoring river conditions. After heavy rain the water can rise quickly. Follow your guide's advice if a trip is delayed or cancelled.
  • Packing too much. You will get wet. Bring a change of clothes and a small towel, and nothing else.

How rafting in Lombok compares with Bali

Bali has well-known rafting rivers such as the Ayung and Telaga Waja, and they are busier and more developed. Lombok has fewer operators and smaller groups, which tends to give a quieter, more local feel. The trade-off is that facilities are simpler and getting there takes longer, so it suits travellers who are happy to plan a little more. For a wider comparison, read our guide to Bali vs Lombok.

Practical information for rafting in Lombok

  • Duration on the water: around 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Total trip time: half a day to a full day, depending on pick-up point and extra stops
  • Group size: some operators set a minimum number of people
  • Booking: reserve at least a day ahead, especially in the dry season
  • Included: check whether transport, lunch, equipment and entrance fees are covered

Best time to go rafting in Lombok

The dry season, from around May to October, offers the most predictable conditions. Water levels are lower and the rapids are gentler, which suits beginners and families.

The wet season, roughly November to March, brings higher water and faster rapids. Some travellers prefer this for a stronger run, but trips can be cancelled at short notice if the river is unsafe. Our guide to the Lombok rainy season explains what to expect.

How to get to the rafting camps

The main rafting area is near Lingsar, close to Mataram and a short drive from Senggigi. From South Lombok, expect a drive of around 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Most operators include hotel pick-up, and a private driver is the easiest option if you are travelling as a family or group. If you are still planning your arrival, see our guide on how to get to Lombok.

Where to stay for rafting trips

Rafting areas are in the north-west, while many of Lombok's best beaches are in the south. Staying there still makes sense if you want to combine a rafting day with surfing, swimming and quieter evenings. Amazing Lombok Resort in Serangan is a convenient base for exploring the south, with easy access to beaches such as Selong Belanak, and we can help arrange a driver for a day trip. Browse our guide to the best Lombok hotels if you would like to compare areas.

Is rafting in Lombok worth it?

Rafting in Lombok is a straightforward way to see the island's inland scenery and add some adventure to a beach holiday. It suits beginners, it is easy to combine with waterfalls and temples, and it gives a different view of daily life away from the coast. Allow a full day so the drive does not feel rushed, and plan around the dry season for calmer water.

Whether you are visiting Lombok for the beaches, culture or outdoor activities, spending a few extra days lets you experience more of what the island offers. Staying in the south of Lombok keeps the beaches close and offers a quieter alternative to busier tourist areas.
