Best Lombok Waterfalls to Refresh During Your Holiday

Lombok does not only have beautiful beaches and tropical gili’s. Another wonder of mother nature are the Lombok waterfalls. Some of them are even mentioned as the best Indonesian waterfalls. So which ones should you visit during your holiday?

Top 4 Lombok waterfalls

Actually, there are too many waterfalls to count in Lombok. Therefore, we selected the four best ones. These are must-visit Lombok destinations:

1. Benang Stokel Waterfall

The name of the most famous Lombok waterfall is taken from the local language which means 'a lump of thread'. It is called this because the twin waterfalls have water that is fibrous like threads which are put together. There’s even a myth about it.

The story goes that once a goddess named Anjani, who was the guardian of Mount Rinjani, always came down to wash her hair in Benang Stokel. Therefore, many local people who have hair problems flock to wash their hair at this waterfall.

This Lombok waterfall has a height of about 20 m. It is located in the Rinjani Geopark area, which means that you have to pay the same entry fee as for climbing the volcano. Still, It is an unforgettable destination. Plus, it has adequate facilities.

2. Benang Kelambu Waterfall

This Lombok waterfall is only 1 km from Benang Stokel. Not only are the waterfalls practically neighbours, they are also quite similar. The name Benang Kelambu translates to ‘thread curtain’ as this is how the water falls.

Here you can see a waterfall in the middle of lush vegetation. The facilities here are also adequate with toilets, gazebos, small food stalls, and parking lots. But unlike the previous Lombok waterfall, you can't enter the water of the natural pool. This is because the waterfall has several steps.

As Benang Kelambu is located so close to its spring on Mount Rinjani, the water is extremely clean. You could even drink it, though we don’t recommend it.

3. Tiu Kelep Waterfall

If you like adventure, exploration and some soft trekking, Tiu Kelep is a must-visit Lombok waterfall. We do suggest you go with a guide. You will pass bridges, shallow streams, rocky paths, stairs, and uphill roads in the middle of a beautiful forest.

The trip takes about 35 to 45 minutes. However, if you really like soft trekking, you can try the way back with a longer path, through culverts and more extreme terrain for about 2 hours.

Arriving at Tiu Kelep Waterfall, you will be greeted by a magnificent waterfall which is about 45 meters high. The water splashing down makes for quite a scene and a loud one at that. When you are lucky, the jets of water create a beautiful rainbow.

Tiu means 'swimming pool' and kelep means 'fly'. The name really describes the look of this waterfall.

4. Sendang Gile Waterfall

If you trek to Tiu Kelep, you will pass another amazing Lombok waterfall. You only need a 15 minutes walk from the entrance to reach Sendang Gile. The waterfall has a height of more than 30 meters.

If you want, you can actually shower with the water streaming on your head, as the river is shallow and wide. There’s even a myth which says that if you let the water run down your face, you will look 1 year younger.

The waterfall is no less beautiful than its brother, Tiu Kelep. Both have views of tropical forests that are green and full of flora and fauna that may feel new to you. A trip to both Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep through an enchantingly beautiful forest is an experience many people talk about back home.

Tips for enjoying Lombok waterfalls

Before you head out to see nature’s beauty up close, you better prepare yourself. These are a couple of do’s and don’t when you want to visit a Lombok waterfall.

  • Bring cash in small notations
  • Use proper footwear, something with enough grip, but still comfortable with hot weather, like mountain sandals
  • Bring a plastic bag to protect your backpack and gadgets from excessive splashing
  • Go to the bathroom while it's available
  • Bring clothes to change, a swimsuit and towel

Things we don’t recommend while you visit the waterfalls:

  • Avoid visiting on a rainy day as this can be dangerous with large flows of water
  • Don’t go just before or after sunset as visiting in the dark is more tricky, plus nocturnal animals roam freely
  • Do not carelessly pick, damage, or disturb the flora and fauna in the waterfall area

Plan your visit

These are the four Lombok waterfalls that we recommend you visit. As they all have their roots from Mount Rinjani, they are located in the Northern and Central areas of the island. When staying at Amazing Lombok Resort, we can arrange a trip to visit one or more of these gorgeous destinations.
