The south of Lombok is one of the better-positioned areas on the island for surf travel. From the resort in Serangan, you can reach beginner breaks in under 10 minutes and several of the most respected advanced waves in Indonesia within an hour.
Through the resort, scooter rental is available with a surf rack fitted, so you can head out without organising transport separately. There is also an outdoor shower for rinsing off after a session.
Selong Belanak (8 minutes): A long bay with a sandy bottom and consistent, manageable waves. Selong Belanak is the most practical beginner beach in the area and has several surf schools operating from the beach, including Aqia Surf. The beach itself is one of the most scenic in the south of Lombok, which makes it a good spot to spend the rest of the day after a morning session.
Seger (40 minutes): Located next to the Mandalika Circuit, Seger breaks over a reef but is manageable for confident beginners when the swell is about 2 to 3 feet. More exposed than Selong Belanak, so worth checking the forecast before heading out.
Tanjung Aan (50 minutes): A wide bay with a long stretch of beach and a forgiving wave on smaller days. Tanjung Aan works for beginners and is worth the drive for the scenery alone. Perfect to combine surfing and a beach day without needing to commit entirely to one or the other.
Serangan (10 minutes on foot or scooter): The closest break to the resort, just 1 km away. A quiet beach with few tourists and more consistent power than the beginner spots. Suited to surfers who are comfortable on a reef and looking for something with a bit more to it than Selong Belanak.
Are Guling (30 minutes): Set in a long bay, Are Guling offers a more challenging wave than the beginner breaks and is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Quieter than Gerupuk, with fewer people in the water.
Senggigi (1 hour 15 minutes): A well-known break near Mataram, on the west coast. Works well on a good day with shoulder-high waves that hold their shape reasonably. Better suited as an occasional day trip than a daily session given the distance.
Mawi (30 minutes): One of the most consistent and respected waves on the south coast. Mawi is a powerful reef break best suited to experienced surfers. Access is by scooter only as the final stretch of road is not suitable for cars. Certainly worth the effort.
Gerupuk (50 minutes): Gerupuk Bay has five breaks reachable by small boat, depending on swell and tide. Suits upper intermediate to advanced surfers. One of the more social surf spots on the island, with several operators running boat trips into the bay.
Desert Point (1 hour 50 minutes): Desert Point is one of the most discussed surf spots in Indonesia. A long, hollow left-hander that fires in the right conditions and draws experienced surfers from across the world. It is a significant journey from the resort, mostly by scooter, or by 4x4 if you prefer a car. Go prepared, because facilities are very limited and the area is remote.
Lombok has surf year-round, which means there is rarely a complete flat spell regardless of when you visit. The two seasons do affect which spots perform best:
Before heading out, it is worth checking conditions. Three reliable resources:
If you are unsure about conditions or which spot suits your level on a given day, ask at the resort. Karin and Stef know the local breaks and can give you a practical read on what to expect.
