The 'top' part of Lombok Island, North Lombok, is mostly known for Mount Rinjani. No wonder because this mountain is also the second highest volcano in Indonesia. It towers above the island with a height of 3,726 metres above sea level.
In terms of length and difficulty, the climbing routes for this volcano are also varied. The Senaru and Torean routes start from North Lombok. Routes from Sembalun, Timbanuh and Tetebatu start in East Lombok. And then there is the Air Berik route from Central Lombok.
But Mount Rinjani is not all there is to do or see in North Lombok. So, let’s see what else you can do here:
Things to do in North Lombok
In North Lombok, the things to do are more inclined towards natural exploration. These are the best five ideas for that:
1. The Gili’s
Never forget the famous Gili trio, which is located in the North part of Lombok. The Gili islands, Trawangan, Meno and Air, perfectly complement each other. Looking to party? Head for Gili Trawangan. Or do you prefer a small calm and quiet island? That’s Gili Meno. Need something between both? Then Gili Air is your place to be.
2. Tourist village
Beleq Gumantar village is a unique traditional tourist village. The hamlet is said to be the pioneer village of all historic villages in North Lombok. Socioculturally, the indigenous people in Beleq Hamlet are closely related to Islam. So apart from traditional houses, you will also find ancient mosques here.
3. Waterfalls
The choice of Lombok waterfalls, especially in North Lombok is endless. The list includes, but is not limited to: Sendang Gile Waterfall, Tiu Sekeper, Tiu Pituq, Kerta Gangga, Tiu Pupus, Tiu Teja, Mangku Sakti, Singang Petune, Kahuripan, Tiu Bilok, Batara Lejang, Kalianjah, Batu Kolam, and Tiu Kelep. If you plan well, you can visit several of them in a single day.
4. Beach
Just like anywhere else in North Lombok has some perfect tropical beaches. Needless to say, they are ready to welcome you. Simply choose one at random depending on your location.
5. Hike
The extremely high Mount Rinjani is not for everyone. However, to go hiking in Lombok you don't really have to go to the highest peak. You can choose one of several beautiful destinations on Rinjani. For example at Segara Anak Lake.
But if you are ready to climb higher, go for it. Reserve your spot in time, because there is a maximum daily quota. And it’s good to know that there is an emergency team on standby. To make the trip less heavy, you can hire a guide and porter who will really help you on the trip.
Where to stay in North Lombok
While in North Lombok, of course you have to take the time to stay at the Gili’s where you will find various hotels, villas, resorts, and so on. Many have international standards and are luxurious.
Stay on the mainland
However, to stay in North Lombok on the mainland, you also have many choices. You can choose the coastal part, for a beautiful beach view. These are also various from luxurious to propre places you can stay with a budget of IDR 400,000 (USD 25.20 | AUD 40 | EUR 23.75).
Some of our recommendations are: Rinjani Lodge Villa & Hotel, Rinjani Beach Eco Resort, and Cozy Cottages Lombok. And for a cheap budget, you can download Indonesian apps like Airbnb, called OYO and Reddoorz.
Stay in nature
