What to Expect from Ramadan in Lombok, Indonesia 2026

Ramadan Indonesia 2026 starts on February 17th and ends on March 19th with Idul Fitri. However, Eid al-Fitr is usually determined the day before, based on the position of the moon, and then announced on national broadcasts. Lombok, which is an island with a majority Muslim population, celebrates this holiday.

Eid and Ramadan in Lombok have a total duration of a full moon cycle, which means up to a full month. The calculation used for this is the Hijri calendar or the Islamic calendar. Therefore, the dates are different every year.

The sequence is that Muslims will start fasting for the usual 29-30 days and celebrate Eid after that. And since Indonesia's majority population is Muslim, Idul Fitri Indonesia (or Eid al-Fitr) will be a national holiday for several days which is expected from 19 to 27 March 2026. Now, we will discuss what you can expect from Ramadan in Lombok, Indonesia.

What about eating during Ramadan in Lombok?

Please note, in the month of Ramadan Lombok, Muslim people will fast (no eating and drinking) from sunrise to sunset. And because of that, almost all local restaurants will be closed for the whole day and reopen from 4 pm.

However, on the positive side, this is also the perfect time for you to explore and try local food. Usually, in the afternoon, Muslims will go out to look for food and break their fasting together. And that's why in the afternoon during Ramadan in Lombok, Indonesia, you can easily find food sellers everywhere. You can find some culinary hotspots during Ramadan. Here are some recommended locations:

  • Jalan Majapahit, Mataram
  • Pasar Narmada, West Lombok
  • Alun-Alun Tastura, Central Lombok
  • Pasar Kuliner Kebon Roek, Mataram
  • Tugu Selong, East Lombok
  • Lapangan Tanjung, North Lombok

In addition, the major mosques usually also have a similar culinary centre. Please note that they only accept cash. And we recommend respecting the Islamic culture in Lombok. So, don't eat while walking down the street, do it privately.

Ramadan festival in Lombok

In recent years, the Pesona Khazanah Ramadan Lombok festival has always been on the tourism calendar of the Lombok government. This festival is usually held for 2 weeks starting in mid-Ramadan until before the 'Takbir Night', which is the night before Idul Fitri Lombok (or Lombok’s Eid al-Fitr, not to be confused with Eid Al Adha).

This festival has stalls from local businesses, food bazaars, Islamic cultural art performances, competitions, book exhibitions, and worship activities. You don't have to be Muslim to stop by and join the festivities. In fact, this festival is an activity with new experiences to explore.

Islamic parades

The night before Indonesian Eid, usually a big parade will be held, including in Lombok. This night is usually called 'Takbir Night'. The parade will feature torchlight parades, miniature mosques, lanterns, and people chanting 'takbir' complete with typical Islamic musical instruments.

The big mosques will be decorated with beautiful lights and the parade will be lively because usually, it is a contest with prizes. They tend to take place in every area of Lombok. However, if you want to see the biggest and most festive ones, usually the government will concentrate the parade in urban areas such as Praya, Central Lombok, or the city of Mataram. This is similar to the Ogoh-ogoh parade in Bali before Nyepi, but the Islamic version.

Brutally honest about Ramadan

The first thing you should know: Lombok is an island that has a Muslim majority. It even has the nickname as the ‘island of 1000 mosques’. And Ramadan is the holy month. Muslims who worship 5 times a day will have several 'additional' rituals during the month of Ramadan.

That is, after the last prayer (Isha) around 7pm, they have additional worship for around 1 hour. Then, before sunrise (from evening until 5 o'clock), usually they will eat sahur (meal before fasting). And the day before Eid al-Fitr, parades will be held in almost all cities in Lombok.

The first morning after Ramadan, there will be an Eid al-Fitr service, marking the end of the fasting. So, even though some local shops will be closed on holidays, many tourist attractions as well as restaurants and other accommodation will remain open.

In short, more praying means more noise from the thousands of mosques. Sometimes they even hold readings all night long. It’s best to prepare some quality earplugs or ask your Lombok accommodation if they have some.

What to do during Ramadan?

During Ramadan life continues more or less as usual, so you can still enjoy any activity. Lombok locals will prefer to rest while fasting, therefore tourist destinations can be more quiet, especially outdoor activities. This is a good time to explore.

Moreover, as Eid al-Fitr approaches, Indonesians have a habit of buying clothes and accessories including new jewelry for Eid al-Fitr and buying little hampers as gifts for family and friends. So the craftsmen automatically prepare more variations. Which means for you as well it’s a great time to shop.

Choose original Lombok weaving, for instance, which ranges from simple to super luxurious. Or Lombok pearls, which are one of the best in the world. They are made into very beautiful jewelry. And this also applies to decorative handicrafts to woven accessories such as bags and hats.

In general, Ramadhan Lombok coincides with the sunny month of April in the dry season. So feel free to do what's on your bucket list. Plus as an added bonus you will discover the month of Ramadan.
