Lombok Pearl, Unique and Great Quality Souvenirs

Indonesia ranks third as an exporter of pearls in the world. And the Lombok pearl is the most famous in all of Indonesia. The type of Lombok pearls is south sea pearl. This type usually takes up to 3 years until it is ready to be harvested. As you can see, weaving, like in Sade Village, is not the only cultural heritage of the island.

Characteristics of a Lombok pearl

The colours produced are around 27 colours ranging from white to golden. And if you see colours that don't really look ‘natural’, they could be injected. Those pearls are not imitations, but still authentic. You can recognise real pearls because they don’t burn and do not melt.

The sizes vary, with an average of 9 to 20 mm. And usually Lombok pearls are sold based on weight per gram and grade, just like precious metals and gemstones.

Pearl jewellery

So, while you're on holiday in Lombok, it would be a waste if you didn't take the time to see these beauties. This is also a very worthy souvenir to take home for yourself, family or friends. Because Lombok pearls are usually sold as beautiful jewellery. The gold, silver and other metals are handmade by local craftsmen. They produce them with world-class quality, and have been high-level export commodities for decades.

Not only are Lombok pearls the main star, but the typical Indonesian jewellery designs make them even more exotic. In some places, you can even request the design and size you want, with an average processing time of 3 days to 2 weeks.

The average price for South Sea pearls is IDR 100,000-500,000/gram (USD 6.5-32.3 | AUD 9.5-47.5 | EUR 5.9-30). And for fresh water, you only need to pay IDR 15,000/grain (USD 1 | AUD 1.4 | EUR 0.9).

Buying pearls in Lombok

Lombok pearl craftsmen, pearl farms and shopping centres are spread out and very easy to find throughout the island, but here are our recommendations:

Autore Pearl Farm

They are a pearl company that has a farm, showroom, and tours with a more modern concept. If you are looking for a fresh, new, elegant jewellery concept, complete with beautiful packaging, Autore Pearl Farm is the place.

They also have a daily tour to learn how they process their jewellery and how the pearl itself is made. They are part of the Autore Group which has dominated South Sea Pearl jewellery and wholesale for decades.

Sekarbela Village

Sekarbela district is one of the most famous Lombok pearl hotspots. This village is inhabited by farmers and pearl craftsmen who have been around for hundreds of years. Work as a craftsman and farmer is no longer a profession but is also something that is passed down from generation to generation.

This is also a great place for you to order your own design or size. If you like a design but want to change the size or colour of the jewellery? You can come and collect it 3 days later. In some shops of Sekarbela Village, you can also see craftsmen working live. This way you know that everything is handmade and traditional.

Alternative Lombok souvenirs

Wherever you get your Lombok pearls, everything taken from Lombok sea water will be good quality. Apart from woven fabric, pearls are luxury, unique and great quality souvenirs. And this of course comes with a price.

Lombok pearls are truly produced from Lombok seawater. However, if on your way you see freshwater pearls, this is an imported commodity as an alternative, because the price is much cheaper. They are authentic, but not as beautiful as the authentic Lombok pearl. When put side by side, you can definitely see the difference, just like diamond and Swarovski.

While souvenir hunting, there are many other things to consider while on holiday in South Lombok. If you want to bring gifts home for friends and family, check out the shop at Amazing Lombok Resort.
