Lombok is a destination for surfers, yet a cove like Mawun Beach also attracts lots of people looking to relax. And believe it or not, the aforementioned interesting wave is for those visitors. So, let’s discover what this Lombok beach has to offer.
About Mawun Beach
Mawun is a very beautiful cove to explore. It’s located between Are Guling and Tampah, but separated by hills. These hills are one of the reasons why tourists like Mawun Beach, because they make for a great surrounding.
You can even venture up these hills for an amazing view. But don’t let yourself be caught off guard because there are no trails. Therefore they can be quite tricky to scale.
If you’re looking for Lombok snorkelling spot, Mawun Beach is not the best option. There is some marine life, yet not a lot. Plus you can already discover it without gear.
Mawun Beach is a great place to bring kids. The youngest ones can play nicely in the soft sand, while the older ones who can confidently swim will enjoy the special wave. Because the seafloor quickly goes deep, there is always just one short wave right on the beach.
There are not a lot of sellers present, so you can relax more. You can still buy some snacks like fresh pineapple, watermelon or unhealthy treats. And cold drinks are also available. The parking fee is IDR 10,000 (USD 0.65 | AUD 1 | EUR 0.6) just like many other Lombok beaches.
How to get to Mawun Beach
While driving to Mawun Beach you will directly feel its quietness. It’s a very remote beach that you can reach within 5 minutes from the main road in the South of Lombok. For instance, Are Guling Beach is only 5 km away, just like Mawi Beach. And when staying at Amazing Lombok Resort you need less than 25 minutes to reach Mawun by motorbike.
But because of its remoteness, we don’t recommend staying after dark. There are no villages in the neighbourhood, only trees and plantations. This all benefits the quiet atmosphere at Mawun Beach Lombok.
For surfers
Located in South Lombok, Mawun presents itself as a reef break with a moderate exposure, offering surfers reasonably consistent waves throughout the year. This spot is versatile and can provide surfable conditions regardless of the season. The most favourable wind direction is from the north, enhancing the quality of the waves
Mawun Beach benefits from distant groundswells, with the optimal swell direction originating from the south-southwest. Surfers can enjoy both left and right-hand breaks along the reef. However, it's important to be cautious of rocks in the area.
Expect sunny weather with pleasantly warm air temperatures, making it feel around 28°C even with a breeze. The sea temperatures are also very warm at 30°C. Enjoying the water at Mawun will be delightful and comfortable, but it's advisable to wear a rash-vest to shield against UV rays.
Prime time
The prime season for catching quality waves at Mawun Beach, characterised by consistent and clean surf conditions with favourable winds, is typically during the summer months. During this time, you're likely to encounter rideable swells accompanied by light or offshore breezes.
Clean and surfable waves grace the shores about 38% of the time in March, offering optimal surfing conditions. However, it's worth noting that approximately 34% of the time, the waves may be affected by unfavourable winds, resulting in less-than-ideal surfing conditions.
Nevertheless, even during these periods, about 28% of the time, the waves may be on the smaller side, making them suitable for beginners and younger surfers, known as groms, to practise and enjoy.
