Bau Nyale festival Lombok

Bau Nyale | The Most Unique Lombok Festival

Every year the Sasak people of Lombok hold a cultural event called Bau Nyale. The men go out in the sea hunting for sea worms in commemoration of the legend surrounding Princess Mandalika. So let’s learn more about this unique and peculiar happening in Lombok Indonesia.

What is Bau Nyale?

The name 'Bau Nyale' is taken from the local language of the Sasak tribe which means looking for or catching sea worms. This is a unique cultural event held every year in Lombok. Bau Nyale is based on the history of Lombok. More specifically, the story of Mandalika Princess.

She was so beautiful that princes and kings from all over the country competed for her love. And this ultimately almost triggered a war that would make the people miserable. In the midst of chaos, Mandalika chose to throw herself into the sea and transform into thousands of sea worms.

This animal can be found all over the Lombok beaches. It’s full of nutrition to eat, and lives in the sand where its presence is not visible.

Every year, locals will come together to seek 'blessings' from the princess with this festival every 10th month of the Sasak calendar. Bau Nyale festival 2024 was February 29 to March 1. This festival has significant cultural and religious significance for the Sasak people, who believe that the appearance of the nyale sea worm marks a sacred event.

What to expect from Bau Nyale

The peak of Bau Nyale will attract a huge crowd of people looking for sea worms at several points on the coast. Nyale sea worms, which are believed to have mystical properties and medicinal properties, are considered a delicacy by the Sasak people.

After being caught, the nyale are usually cooked in various dishes, such as soup, with chili sauce or as satay. In some places it will also be distributed to festival visitors as a symbol of unity and abundance. So sometimes festival visitors have the opportunity to taste these traditional dishes and delve into Lombok's rich culinary heritage.

However, the government and local communities also hold several events apart from the hunt for nyale. For example, at Seger Beach, Mandalika, Central Lombok there are several celebrations for this festival. Here you’ll find:

  • Cilokak or traditional music typical of the Sasak Tribe of East Lombok,
  • Maos or reading of the Sasak tribe's heirloom lontar palms,
  • Betandak of young Sasak tribe men and women,
  • Wayang kulit or shadow puppet performances,
  • And the colossal dance of the legend of Princess Mandalika.

Several places will even start the festivals from February 25. So if you are ever in Lombok during Bau Nyale, make sure to schedule it into your holiday planning. However, you can go to the celebration center which this year will be held in Mandalika.

Nyale dishes

People usually eat nyale raw or cook it with special spices. The nyale catch will also fill traditional markets for a while. However, you can taste this annual dish at several proper places such as JM Hotel Kuta, Lombok.

Because of the medical properties for fertility not many people sell this dish. However, some local places will usually put up special signs, because this is a menu that is only available once a year. You can also ask locals about the festivals, because not all information is listed in the official government schedule. Many arts communities and people celebrate this a week before or a week after the specified day.

If you stay at the Amazing Lombok Resort, you can reach the Mandalika area in an hour's drive. And after that you go enjoy the Selong Belanak area which is no less than Mandalika.
